A Cardiff New Order show which was set to kick off at 4pm today was cancelled with hours to spare leaving fans gutted.

the 80s synth-pop group – behind hits including Blue Monday, True Faith, and Thieves Like Us – were due to play tonight (August 22) at Alexandra Head, Cardiff Bay but the outdoor event has been cancelled last minute due to ‘extreme weather’.

McFly took to the stage at the event last night, with the likes of Becky Hill and Tiesto set to play over the weekend.

It would have been New Order’s first gig in the city since 1983, and their first show in Wales since they played in Swansea in 1985.

Organisers The Bay Series Cardiff released a statement which read: ‘Unfortunately due to extreme weather including severe winds, tonight’s New Order show has been cancelled on health and safety grounds.

‘We are sorry for the inconvenience caused and your refund will be automatically processed.

‘We will continue to monitor the weather but are assured that Becky Hill and Tiesto events will remain unaffected.’

Having informed fans ‘rehearsal complete, see you tomorrow Cardiff’ just last night, New Order took to social media hours before kick off and wrote: ‘We are sorry to say that our show tonight in Cardiff is cancelled due to high winds on site.

‘There will be an official statement in due course regarding tickets. We are disappointed to not be performing for you all tonight, but safety of our fans & crew always comes first.

DJ TinTin was due to begin the evening with a half-hour set at 4pm, with UNE taking to the stage at 4,30pm, followed by CMAT at 5.45pm.

The Charlatans were all set to warm New Order up at 7.15pm before the 80s legends were due to take to the stage for the headline slot at 8.50pm.

New Order are heading to Manchester to play at Wythenshawe Park on Saturday August 24, but fans who had tickets for their cancelled Cardiff gig – many of whom were already en route to the city when they heard the news – have been left devastated.

@Jack32X added: ‘Absolutely gutted, I hope this can go ahead another time one day.’

@lisahoey9 said: ‘Booked tickets for my husband as an anniversary present. He is gutted and I am gutted for him !’

@Cal_Roberts_ wasn’t happy about the news, as they wrote: ‘Fuming, already half way to Cardiff and literally got the message through as I’m having a wee in the services.

‘Hotel paid for. Daughter travelled from other side of the country, surely we knew about wind yesterday. Sad sad face.’

New Order formed on 1980 after the disbandment of Joy Division following the death by suicide of lead singer Ian Curtis
