The Permian Basin in Texas & New Mexico has lots of these old wells that leak produced water, oil and gas to the atmosphere every day, and have leaked for decades. Ranchers like this gentleman have absolutely no one to turn to for help, regulatory agencies that oversee the oil & gas industry offer little to no assistance at all.

NAME THEM!!! This is poor journalism. Why don't we start calling these companies out? The Cotter Brothers are the ones who destroyed Canon City, Colorado with their uranium mines then sold the mess to another company who ended up not being able to afford the cleanup, so then they called it a superfund site and cleanup comes out of our tax monies, but even that didn't work, so now they gave up, and the poisons leach into the water and the soil and give children cancers.

Can’t they just cap it with a ventilated tent of some kind? It would be inexpensive. It wouldn’t fix the problem, but it would keep the birds and wildlife from drinking the water. I’m guessing a couple thousand or less

Lake Boehmer in West Texas is toxic because of a leaking oil well that was originally drilled in 1951 and later converted to a water well. The well has been leaking toxic salt water, heavy metals, and hydrogen sulfide for almost two decades, creating a 60-acre lake that's three times saltier than the ocean. The water also contains sulfate levels that are 25 times higher than the legal limit for drinking water
