Sri Lanka’s new president Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been sworn into office, promising “clean” politics as the country recovers from its worst economic crisis.
The left-leaning Dissanayake has cast himself as a disruptor of the status quo, and analysts see his victory as a rejection of corruption and cronyism that has long plagued the country.
Saturday’s election was the first since 2022, when discontent over the economy fuelled mass protests and chased former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa from power.
“We need to establish a new clean political culture,” he said. “I commit to achieving this. We willdo the utmost to win back the people’s respect and trust in the political system.”

As an average Sri lankan, I disagree with the reporter here. You need to know that Sri Lankans have now elected the most talkative candidate out of 39 contenders this time. AKD aggressively spread falsehoods among the rural working class, to the point where many believed his misleading claims about the Ranil government, which were far from true. AKD gained power through a web of lies and fabrications. While there has been some corruption in Sri Lankan politics, it was nowhere near as severe as AKD portrayed. Unfortunately, many gullible and innocent rural voters believed his rhetoric. Now, the tables have turned, and AKD must fulfill the promises of his boastful manifesto. Without a parliamentary majority, his survival largely depends on how well he can address the rising cost of essential goods and the cost of living, all while facing a debt-ridden treasury burdened with $56 billions of debt to be re paid starting 2028. Sri Lankans have elected the most incompetent yet talkative leader this time. God save Sri Lanka.

This is the last hope for Sri Lanka. The biggest concern is that whether the opposition parties are willing to let him rule. All the politicians except a hand full are corrupted to the core. This man's main vision is to put an end to corruption which does not sit well with the majority of the Parliament. Unfortunately there are around 60% of the population still worship those corrupted politicians because either they are very narrow minded or because they get other benefits from those politicians.
If the people support (people living in the country and abroad), this man has the vision to change the future of the nation for better.
