England's identity? What about the UK. Casual exchange of English and British again? England has no history or identity outside these islands. There has never been a monarch of English provenance in it's entire history the Tudors, a Welsh dynasty, were probably the greatest. French, Scots, Dutch, and German stand large among them. The English are a melding of many peoples over many centuries.
