Frasier fans were delighted when the reboot was announced last year and Kelsey Grammer would return to the small screen after two decades reprising his role in the popular comedy sitcom. Despite bringing back the Emmy Award-winning show viewers have taken a swipe at show writers Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli after feeling “disappointed”.

The show followed Dr. Frasier Crane who moved back to his hometown of Seattle, America. After being forced to live with his father and work as a radio psychiatrist the revival picked up where he left off exactly twenty years ago.

In 2004 the season finale was viewed by 33.7 million people and became the 11th-most-watched series final episode of all time and the 7th-most-watched from NBC. The episode had an overwhelmingly positive reception and left fans wanting more, leading to Paramount Plus picking up the new show.

Ahead of the debut of series two, fans took to Reddit to share their views. One user said: “Ultimately I still prefer the original. I think this suffers from a lot of the blandness and pacing of modern sitcoms which is why I don’t really enjoy them any more.”

“I think the show is just a bit insufferable,” chimed in a second person. However, a third person admitted they would persevere and not give up: “I am surprised that the quality of the writing is not better. I am going to stick with it to give it a proper chance.”

Picking up on the creators a fourth person weighed in: “Sadly, David Hyde Pierce made Frasier more likeable and relatable, and a Frasier without Niles is just meh… The casting for the reboot doesn’t work.

“There’s no chemistry. Freddy is obnoxious and unlikeable and David is a bad caricature of his father. Difficult to watch. I’d like to see the reboot set with Frasier still hosting an over-the-top television show. They should pay David Hyde Pierce whatever it takes to bring him back to join Frasier.”

The first two episodes of Frasier season two are available to stream starting on Thursday, September 19, on Paramount Plus. New episodes drop every Thursday until November 14.

Another added: “It’s utter crap. I love Cheers and Frasier immensely, and had high hopes for new Frasier (not that I thought it would be amazing but I was very glad to see that character back) but it’s been wasted.

“Bad scripts, boring situations, terrible acting from everyone except Kelsey himself (who mostly still has ‘it’),” they continued.

“It’s depressing as it’s so lost from what it was originally, no warmth, fake laughter, many times Frasier’s standing back and letting 2 bland characters talk as if they are in an early read-through rather than the final take.”

During season one the first ten episodes focused on getting the character re-acquainted with his old stomping ground, although he oddly didn’t visit his usual drinking hole.

There have been lots of references to the spin-off Cheers which provides insight into why he adapts to his new surroundings.

Although Frasier’s history with Cheers remained a big part of the return – especially since it paved the way for the birth of Freddy.
