The open letter by the former staff members noted that they turned against Trump during the 2020 election cycle and despite plenty of disagreements with Kamala Harris and Tim Walz campaign, they are voting for the Democrat nominee. “Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s to be expected,” they wrote. “The alternative, however, is simply untenable.”
Project 2025 featured as a point why they want to distance from the Republican campaign, though Trump said he knows nothing about this. The former staff said this controversial blueprint for Trump’s second term will hurt real, everyday people and weaken the sacred institutions.
The signatories include a chief of staff, a legislative director and a deputy campaign manager for McCain. Bush, Romney did not attend the Republican convention last month. Romney joked on the last day of the Democrat convention that he was not the surprise guest and his best guess was Taylor Swift.
Mark Salter, a former chief of staff for Mr. McCain; Joe Donoghue, the senator’s former legislative director; Reed Galen, his deputy campaign manager and a co-founder of the Lincoln Project; Mike Murphy, a former McCain campaign strategist; Jean Becker, a chief of staff for George H.W. Bush; and Jim Swift, a senior editor of The Bulwark, were among the signatories.
