Former BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw and his 81-year-old mother got a fright when their apartment was targeted by a masked gang of thieves in Ibiza.

Nick was over on the island celebrating his milestone 40th birthday, which landed on August 14.

Accompanied by friends and family, including his mum, Eileen Grimshaw, and fiancé Meshach Henry, Nick had rented a villa for the occasion.

to his horror, however, the podcaster and presenter – who is also on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox – had his place ransacked while he slept.

They said: ‘Sadly, Nick’s villa was on the target list – simply due to it being known for being used by high-net-worth clients.

‘The gang would have had no idea who he was. Sadly it’s a case of the wrong place at the wrong time but it’s scary, to say the least.

‘Nick was obviously upset but thought it best to keep things off social media.’

They added: ‘When the raid happened, Grimmy, his mum and his friends were in the villa.

‘Luckily they were asleep, but it was unsettling to wake up to, to say the least.’

Nobody was hurt during the incident and Nick is now back in London already, Metro.co.uk understands.

Since his return home to the capital, Nick has remained quiet online, with no new posts on his Instagram feed since he promoted his podcast on August 8.

Before that, his last personal post was a sweet snap alongside his mum as she, too, celebrated a birthday.

Uploading a slew of snaps from a celebratory meal with relatives, his caption read: ‘A couple of heatwave huns came to visit London Town to celebrate Eileen turning 81 years young ’

Eileen was inundated with birthday wishes in the comments, including from the likes of Vicky Pattison.

Nick got his first big break in radio in 2012, which catapulted him to fame he replaced Chris Moyles as host of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show.

He went on to secure himself a range of jobs across various media platforms, including a stint judging on The X Factor in 2015 alongside Simon Cowell, Cheryl, and close pal Rita Ora.

Nick left Radio 1 in August 2021 following 14 years of hosting a variety of shows across the network.

At the time as he reflected on the job, he said it was his ‘childhood dream’ and he ‘really fell in love with it, and felt the community of it’.

The beloved radio star now co-hosts the Sidetracked podcast alongside DJ Annie MacManus, regularly interviewing celebrity guests such as Jade Thirlwall, Charli XCX, and Shania Twain.
